Our last post explained the cycle of the 3 main doshas that happen everyday; this post will go a little deeper on how to begin aligning your body and mind with the natural cycles around us. First let's do a refresher on a few key points!
There are 5 material elements - vayu (air), akash (ether), agni (fire), jalam (water), and prithvi (earth)
There are 3 main elemental combinations, known as doshas - vata (air+ether), pitta (fire+water), kapha (earth+water)
Each dosha dominates at particular times of the day/night -
2am - 6am = vata time
6am - 10am = kapha time
10am - 2pm = pitta time
__________
2pm - 6pm = vata time
6pm - 10pm = kapha time
10pm - 2am = pitta time
For optional alignment with our natural environment, a typical day should resemble the timetable below:
24 Hour Dosha Cycle
VATA | KAPHA | PITTA |
First Cycle: 2am - 6am Should be asleep, in a deep dreaming state. | First Cycle: 6am - 10am Awaken routine, meditation, quiet preparation for the day. | First Cycle: 10am - 2pm Eat nutrient dense meal, do quiet activities. |
Second Cycle: 2pm - 6pm Perform most active work of the day during this time. Meditate facing North. | Second Cycle: 6pm to 10pm Perform settling activities, prepare for bed. | Second Cycle: 10pm to 2am Go to bed. |
Of course, the template above may require adjustments based on individuality and lifestyle. Determining your own dosha (prakriti and vikruti) is vital in ayurvedic self-care. It can help with planning your day, and making the right choices for yourself when it comes to the most simple matters which have great impacts.
